!!!Never Drink And Drive!!!

Volkswagen Golf R

Volkswagen has quietly revealed that the hot all-wheel-drive R version of its facelifted seventh generation Golf will now be offered with a ‘Performance Pack’, though whether UK VW buyers will be offered the optional performance upgrades is still under consideration.

In terms of power, the Golf R Performance Pack develops 308bhp. That marks no change over the standard version of the car, though VW did free up an extra 12bhp from the Golf R’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four cylinder when the car was facelifted earlier this year.

0-62mph remains at 4.6 seconds, but the 155mph electronic top speed limiter is removed, allowing the Golf R Performance to run all the way to 166mph flat out for both estate and hatchback versions. A new titanium sports exhaust system is fitted too, which VW says is 7kg lighter than the standard setup and produces a more raucous exhaust note.

At the front end of the car, the Golf R’s front bumper makes use of air curtains for further aerodynamic optimisation. A new lip spoiler is attached to the top of the hatchback roof which VW says produces up to 20kg extra downforce at speed, and the exits of the new titanium exhaust system are housed inside an aggressive looking rear diffuser.

The shock absorbers and steering has been tweaked, and the Golf R Performance also gets modified brakes – the 17-inch drilled disks are now clamped down on by an R Performance caliper with new brake pads. New lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels are on the options list, alongside semi-slick tyres. Inside, the cabin is trimmed with faux carbon and leather.

VW has not yet confirmed the R Performance pack’s availability in the UK, though it will be available in Europe soon, so watch this space.
